A Perfect Day at the River
This summer, one of our terrific volunteers, Martha, invited the NRC after-school kids to her family river house for a field trip. It was a day to remember! We had so much fun swimming in the Rappahannock River with brightly colored inner tubes and eating ourselves silly.
Martha and her sister Trish rolled out the red carpet for our kids. We ate hot dogs and potato salad. We sat in the sun and watched the shorebirds fly by and really relaxed. Martha pulled out a huge net and we caught crabs and little rainbow colored fish. The kids were scared at first, but soon they were picking up fish and crabs and squealing with delight! Just when we thought that it was the best day we could have possibly had, Martha came to the shoreline and shouted, “Who wants water melon in the water?” and she waded out to us and handed us each a huge piece.
Cheers to you Martha and Trish! We will always remember this perfect day.
